The Robert Q Travel & Airbus Terminal is a recognized landmark on one of London’s main arterial routes. Originally a Canadian Tire building, its mid-century modern design has served the community for decades. Skinner & Skinner Architects Inc. was tasked with revitalizing the façade to better define the space as a terminal and hub for travellers.

The building’s orientation presented a design challenge as the entrance and service bays are perpendicular to the street, and large masonry wall runs parallel to the sidewalk in place of a typical entrance. The solution required a way to clearly articulate the building’s distinct services of travel agency and airbus services, while improving flow and enhancing the pedestrian experience.

The design brings new life to the building by lightening its overall mass. Fresh white replaces both the original beige brick base, and precast concrete rafters allowing their rhythm and movement to be expressed. A dark band beneath the roof creates shadow and separation between the two masses, making it appear to float.

Enlarged signage in branded colours signals the separate service functions of the building, often previously confused. Expansive glass window-walls visually connect the interior services and airbus passenger lounge with exterior loading zones. The pedestrian experience is defined by a pergola and large bench effectively creating an inviting outdoor room. The large masonry wall street façade prominently features the company logo and address and flagpoles signal the entrance and international nature of the building’s activities, while balancing the horizontal mass of the building. Carefully articulated landscape provides wayfinding for travellers from the parking area into the building through a natural aesthetic.
