St James Renovation

The renovation and addition to this century-old home on Saint James Street reimagines its historic form while adapting it for modern living. Nestled in London’s Old North neighborhood, the project revitalizes the aging structure, expanding its modest footprint with a rear addition that respects the home’s original proportions.

Echoing the steeply sloped roofline, the addition seamlessly integrates with the existing architecture. The renewed street elevation distills traditional elements—porch, bay window, and gabled roof—into a composition of refined simplicity. Horizontal wood siding, punctuated by vertical accents, breaks up the elongated side façades, while a rhythmic stack of windows bridges the original home and the new extension.

Inside, soaring two-story spaces in the dining, kitchen, and living areas create a loft-like openness, with sightlines extending through stacked windows to the rear garden. Exposed brick from the original house meets the new addition, subtly layering past and present.

A detached garage, positioned at the property’s edge, shapes a garden courtyard. Maintaining the home’s scale and character within its historic streetscape, the design strikes a balance between tradition and contemporary living.
